Broadway House Staff Members Receive "Humanism" Awards

Award Winners: Sr. Elsie Bernauer and Maggie Sosa

August 3, 2009—Broadway House is proud to announce that The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey has named Sr. Elsie Bernauer and Ms. Maggie Sosa as recipients of their 2009 Humanism in Healthcare Award. This award emphasizes the “human” aspect of patient care, and how it impacts the quality of life for all people. Effective medical care can only be accomplished in a compassionate healthcare environment. Sr. Elsie Bernauer is the Pastoral Care Counselor and Chaplain and Maggie Sosa is the Director of Advanced Practice Nursing, both staff members exemplify the CARE in Broadway House for Continuing Care.

Sr. Elsie is a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic, based in Caldwell, NJ. Her background includes many years as a school teacher, but over the last twenty years she has focused on pastoral massage, spiritual counseling, palliative care and complimentary healing therapies. Sr. Elsie say“Healing is about connection- connecting to people in their suffering. It is the human bond that sustains our spirit and heals the mind, body and soul”. She listens- without interruption, assumption or judgment. Her healing touch and devotion to the residents of Broadway House brings comfort to their bodies and peace to their minds.

“Maintaining the dignity of each patient is a core function of nursing. Ccompassion is essential to providing healthcare and enabling healing” said Maggie Sosa, APRN when asked to describe her approach to working at Broadway House. . People who come to Broadway House are often so afraid and stigmatized by HIV, Maggie accepts each individual unconditionally, partnering with and empowering them to choose wellness. Once the bonds of trust and respect are developed, residents are more willing to follow the course of treatment that Maggie so expertly plans. The combination of compassion and medical competence lead to improved resident outcomes.

Our “house” is a better place because of Sr. Elsie Bernauer and Maggie Sosa. They and all the other caring staff members provide a loving, nurturing environment for our residents. Compassionate healthcare starts and ends with the people who deliver the care. We are proud to have individuals like Sr. Elsie and Maggie on our team! Congratulations on receiving this award.
