Personal Tragedy Inspires Teen To Help Others

A day doesn’t go by without Michael Linskey remembering his father.  His dad, Mark, was a husband, friend, contractor and coach who passed away in 2005 from complications of AIDS.  Mike has gone on to graduate from Pope John High School, be named as The New Jersey Herald 2008 Baseball Player of the Year and expects to play baseball at Rutgers where he will be a sophomore at this fall.   But his father isn’t here to share the successes.

When the medical complications from AIDS made taking care of Mark no longer possible, his family looked to Broadway House for Continuing Care for help. As New Jersey’s only post-acute residential facility for people living with HIV/AIDS, Broadway House specializes in treating adults living with this virus. Five years after his father’s passing, Michael is giving back to help the facility that was there for his family when they had no where else to turn.

The second annual “Broadway House 5K/10K Run & Walk, In Memory of Mark Linskey” organized by Mike Linskey and Kathleen Oroho, will take place on Sunday, July 18 at The Sussex County Fair Grounds.  This event will raise both awareness about the problem of AIDS and funds for the facility that cares for others struggling with this disease. Last year’s inaugural run raised over $7,000. This is an event for the whole family, including a fun run for children ages 7 and under.

Michael has taken a personal tragedy and turned it into an opportunity to honor his father’s life and help others.

The race will begin at 9:30 AM on July 18 at the Sussex County Fair Grounds in Augusta, with a fun run for younger children starting at 9:00 AM.  Pre-registration is $20.00 per racer for the 5K and $25.00 for the 10K.  The race is USATF certified.  A donation of $10 for the Fun Run will be accepted on race day.

All proceeds will benefit resident care at Broadway House. More information about participation or sponsorship can be found at www.broadwayhouse5k.webs.com  or by emailing broadwayhouse5K@gmail.com.
