June 26, 2007—Recently, three Broadway House staff members have been recognized for their dedication and commitment to our residents by NJANPHA (New Jersey Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging) and The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey.  Broadway House congratulates these employees for their commitment to our residents and for the commendable work they do at our facility.

On May 31, 2007, Melissa Morales, LPN was presented with NJANPHA’s 2007 Staff Person of the Year award at the annual conference in Atlantic City.  This award is presented to an individual who enhances the lives of those people living or working within her facility as demonstrated through acts of kindness, giving and selflessness for the benefit of others. During her six years of employment at Broadway House, Melissa has quietly and gently touched the lives of all who come in contact with her. In nominating Melissa, her supervisors and coworkers said "She has a calming spirit. She is a gentle mover and shaker."  Melissa gets a lot accomplished with the residents -- in a very soft way.  Melissa’s caring ways and kind heart are the personality attributes that won her this prestigious award.

The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey has recognized two other staff members with their 2007 Humanism in Healthcare Awards.  This award emphasizes the “human” aspect of resident care, and how it impacts the quality of life for all people.  Effective medical care can only be accomplished in a compassionate healthcare environment.  Jennifer Stephens, Assistant Director of Activities and Merline Douglass-Taylor, Assistant Director of Nursing, epitomize these qualities of caring and compassion and were both recipients of this award.

Ms. Stephens has risen up the ranks at Broadway House.  She started as a part-time activity aide in 2003, eventually assuming a full-time position. Later she became the Supervisor of Activities and in 2007 was promoted to Assistant Director of Activities.  When asked to describe Jennifer, her supervisor used three words: “patience, grace and tact”.  She is the “go-to girl” for people who don’t have anyone else to go to.  Jen’s passion is “the overlooked” and the “end-of-life” resident.  She is able to see behind the gruff and often angry exterior of a person and help heal the hurting, kinder person that lies beneath the surface.  Jennifer connects with the residents and brings out the best in them.  Some would say Jennifer is “wise beyond her years”.

Merline Douglas Taylor came to Broadway House with a wealth of expertise.  More than 30 years nursing experience in a variety of areas has prepared her for her current job. She is responsible for directing the day-to-day clinical work of over 90 nursing staff members.  Ms. Taylor has the rare leadership ability to draw people to her.  Her attitude and demeanor with colleagues, residents, and families, makes everyone feel comfortable interacting with her.  Merline has a calming affect on people and she takes the time to really listen to those who cross her path.  Merline is an expert at deescalating tense situations and angry feelings.  She helps others to see the big picture and facilitates difficult situations, so that each person can walk away with his self esteem in tact.

Broadway House is truly fortunate to have these three talented women on our staff.  They deserve the recognition they have received. This caring attitude and devotion to our residents is demonstrated by all one hundred and seventy three people employed at Broadway House. Every single member of the staff is dedicated to ensuring that all residents are treated like family.  Each resident is someone’s loved one and deserves our devoted care and attention.  This sensitivity to the physical, social and psychological needs of our residents is one of the things that set Broadway House apart from other long term care facilities.  Congratulations to our award winners and to all the staff at Broadway House.
