Education
for All at Broadway House
July 31, 2006,
Newark, NJ – Broadway House for Continuing
Care, the state’s only specialized nursing care facility
for individuals living with AIDS, offers college and graduate students
a unique learning experience. Those students who desire hands-on
experience in the social services can take advantage of Broadway
House’s internship program each semester. This summer Anupama
Bedi (Edison, NJ), who is currently pursuing a Masters in Physician
Assistant Studies at UMDNJ, jumped at the opportunity to gain experience
from such an innovative medical program.
As a recreation
intern, Bedi’s responsibilities included
assisting with various activities for the residents, ranging from
karaoke to physical exercises. Bedi’s Bachelor’s Degree
in Athletic Training also allowed her to present information seminars
to staff and residents about the importance of exercise for HIV/AIDS
patients. She taught the staff of Broadway House how influential
and important interns can be when she started a yoga class for
residents, promoting relaxation as part of their physical activity
regimen. Commenting on her decision to complete her Masters’ project
at the facility, Bedi said, “Broadway House has taught me
how to be a health care provider in a close-knit community with
a large need. They set the standard for efficiency.”
Broadway House for Continuing Care, a 74 bed medical facility,
is an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey. They also offer internships in Public Relations/Communications,
Community Health, Art Therapy, and Substance Abuse. All reliable
and professional-minded students are encouraged to apply online.
