Social Services Director Named to Mayor's Commission

NEWARK—With more than 900 people walking the streets of Newark without food, water, or proper shelter, the Booker Administration has taken the initiative to challenge the problem head on. Broadway House's Director of Social Services, Gloria Horton, has been named to the newly formed Mayor's Commission on the Homeless. Working for more than 13 years at Broadway House, Mrs. Horton understands the importance of an individual's surroundings and the effect it has on their day to day lives. She believes that creating a safe haven is the first step in regaining hope to the residents of Newark facing difficult and challenging times that lead to homelessness.

At Broadway House our goal is to restore residents back to their optimal level of health and facilitate their return to the community. Mrs. Horton directs the department responsible for this task. Discharging residents into appropriate living situations is an important key to their continued health improvement. Homelessness exacerbates the problem of people living with HIV/AIDS. Horton's knowledge and expertise in this area makes her an invaluable asset to Mayor Booker’s commission.

Mrs. Horton explains, "The Commission’s goal is to improve people's quality of life, and to look at new avenues to assist them, like the Jon Bon Jovi Genesis Homes project (a low income housing project which is providing permanent homes to 55 families, with units designated for Broadway House Residents). When people are happy and feel safe in their environment, they are most likely to take their medication, which reduces hospital recidivism. If people don't have safe places to lay their heads, they don't take their medication. Wellness and security of a home go together, so we are very excited that now we can work on putting people in permanent housing." Broadway House is proud that Mayor Booker’s administration has tapped the expertise of Gloria Horton for this committee. Mrs. Horton’s dedication to serving all the people of Newark is commendable. Broadway House residents and the community of Newark will be well-served by her appointment to the commission on homelessness.
