Broadway House Named Recipient of 2008 Health Research and Educational Trust
of New Jersey Community Outreach Award for its AIDS Community Education Program
NEWARK – Broadway House for Continuing Care’s HIV/AIDS education program for youths was recognized with this year’s Health Research and Educational Trust of New Jersey (HRET) Community Outreach Award on February 29, 2008.
The AIDS Community Education (A.C.E.) program offers comprehensive HIV/AIDS education for students in grades 4 through 12 in Newark and other school districts.
The Community Outreach Award was presented to Broadway House at the Annual New Jersey Hospital Association Meeting in Princeton, New Jersey. HRET is a nonprofit affiliate of The New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA).
The Community Outreach Award was founded on the belief that the partnerships between a hospital and its community are necessary to build and sustain health. Through hospital community outreach programs the infrastructure is created to bring about changes needed to attain improved health and well-being for the community.
“We are very honored that our A.C.E. program was chosen for this prestigious award,” said Jeanine Reilly, Executive Director of Broadway House for Continuing Care. “The mission of Broadway House is not only to care for people with HIV/AIDS but to prevent the spread of this pandemic. Reaching and educating children is a key step toward this goal.”
Through A.C.E., teachers are given age-appropriate material to review with their students prior to their arrival at Broadway House. During their visit, students tour the facility, participate in a staff-led workshop on HIV/AIDS and healthy decision-making for life, and meet with individuals living with HIV/AIDS to learn about their experiences. Alternatively, Broadway House staff, including members of its resident speaker’s team, will visit schools that are unable to come to the facility.
“The success of our A.C.E program is predicated on the involvement of Broadway House residents who willingly share their personal stories with the children,” said James Gonzalez, president and CEO of Broadway House for Continuing Care. “The message of making the right decisions in life is both emotional and powerful.”
The program, now in its third year, educated 1,200 Newark students during the 2006-07 school year. For more information about A.C.E. or to schedule a visit, contact Joy Robinson at (973) 268-9797 x 1287. Broadway House is an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
