High School Students Make A Difference
January 2008 - This holiday was brighter for the residents of Broadway House for Continuing Care because of five students from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. Member of the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance Club visited Broadway House and came with a very generous donation. Club members; Christian Berk, Jeremy Busch, Kerilyn Bartley, Melia Gorsak, Kristyn Berger, Kathryn Moynihan, Lauren Hirschorn, Linda Timko and Michelle Conway raised $895.00 and donated it for the purchase of a new projector.
The goals of this club, as explained by the students, are to promoted inclusion, understanding and acceptance of all people. No one should be discriminated against because of their race, religion, color or sexual orientation. This club works within the school to model a positive atmosphere and to prevent bullying behavior.
As a fundraiser, members sold red ribbons at school to publicize World AIDS Day and raise student awareness of this deadly virus. Money was also raised by Michelle Conway, one of the club members, who requested donations to Broadway House in lieu of gifts at her recent 17th birthday party. The students visited Broadway House to bring their donation, tour the facility and meet with residents.
This generous donation highlights the kindness and compassion of these students and their desire to “make a difference” in the lives of our residents. Once the projector has been received, a joint student-resident “movie night” will be planned.
