Opening of the Health Care Foundation of New Jersey’s Palliative Care Suite
January 2008 -
Broadway House for Continuing Care celebrated the opening of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey’s Palliative Care Suite recently. A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the facility’s milestone in further improving the quality care for its residents. Palliative care is a treatment approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification, assessment and treatment of pain and physical, psychosocial and/or spiritual problems.
Over the past few years, with grants approved by HFNJ, Broadway House has made many improvement to its’ facility and expanded various programs. This latest grant funded the renovation of underutilized space to create two new palliative care rooms. These suites created a peaceful setting where loved ones have the opportunity to spend the night with residents in their final stages of life. The addition of an Aquamassage machine helps relax residents who may have chronic pain which is often associated with this virus.
Prior to the opening of the HFNJ Palliative Care Unit, Broadway House was already being recognized for its end-of-life treatment. In 2004 and 2005 Broadway House was given awards by the American Hospital Association and the NJ Association of Non-profit Homes for the Aging for innovative palliative care programs. In 2007 we were recognized again by the AHA with a Circle of Life Citation of Honor for broad and ground breaking complementary therapies and pain management for specific populations.
Broadway House, in Newark, is an affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and is the state’s only residential nursing facility that treats adults with HIV/AIDS. The generosity of the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey has helped improved the lives of the residents who call our house a “home.
