NEWARK—271 runners and walkers took to the hills of Sparta on Saturday, August 15th to help raise money for people living with AIDS. The first annual Broadway House 5K in memory of Mark Linskey was a tremendous success.

Recent high school graduates and race organizers Mike Linskey and Kathleen Oroho along with key volunteers, such as the entire Morrison family, arrived in the predawn hours to get everything ready for what they hoped would be a good turnout.

At 7:30 A.M. people arrived at the registration table and the line never stopped. In the height of vacation season so many runners and walkers came out to support the event, making this inaugural race more successful then anyone could have imagined.

Mark Linskey was a husband, father and contractor in the Sparta area who passed away in 2005 after living for many years with AIDS. His son, Michael decided to organize this fundraiser to heighten awareness about the continuing problem of AIDS in our communities and raise funds to support resident programs at Broadway House.

More than 22,000 children have lost at least one parent to AIDS. “If I can help one person become aware of the AIDS epidemic and spare them the tragic consequences of contracting this virus, then all my efforts are worthwhile” stated Mike Linskey. “Broadway House was there for my family when we had no where else to turn, I wanted to do something to give back” he added.

Executive Director of Broadway House, Jeanine Reilly had high praise for Michael and Kathleen. “These young adults exhibited so much dedication and maturity in organizing this event. We are grateful for everything they have done to help our residents”.

James Gonzalez, President and CEO marveled at the turnout. “Mike and Kathleen coordinated a phenomenal event. We are deeply appreciative of their efforts and the support of the Sussex county community for this race”.

Over $5,000 was raised for Broadway House and plans are already underway for next year’s race. We would like to thank all the donors, volunteers and participants for their support of this event. We hope to see you all next year!
