CELEBRATING
INNOVATION IN END-OF-LIFE CARE
Broadway House for Continuing Care Recognized
New Jersey's
Only Nursing Home for People Living with HIV/AIDS Gains National
Attention.
Newark, NJ, July 26, 2004 -- Broadway House for
Continuing Care, New Jersey's only specialized care facility for
people living with HIV/AIDS today was named a 2004 Circle of Life
Award Honoree. Broadway House was recognized for its outstanding
program that improves the care of patients near the end of life
or with life-threatening conditions.
The Circle of Life Award celebrates programs across
the nation that have made great strides in palliative and end-of-life
care. The awards are supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
in Princeton, N.J and are sponsored by the American Hospital Association,
the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the
American Medical Association and the National Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization. Broadway House is one of ten organizations honored
this year by the Circle of Life Award Program.
Broadway House is designed to meet the post-acute
needs of people living with AIDS, providing complete and expert
residential health care and rehabilitative services.
"We are particularly proud of the palliative
care we provide at Broadway House and of the health gains made by
providing that care," said James Gonzalez, MPH, CHE, President
and Chief Executive Officer of Broadway House. "Our goal for
residents -- whose average age is just 35 -- is discharge planning
and preparation for life back in the community. This requires medical,
nursing, psychological, and pastoral care; treatment, pain, and
wound management; and rehabilitation. We have found that quality
palliative care measures, such as guided imagery, meditation, aroma
therapy, bereavement therapy, music therapy, acupuncture, and/or
massage, helps improve outcomes."
“Broadway House for Continuing Care has made
great strides in end-of-life and palliative care. Their program
reflects the importance they put on serving patients, families and
those around them,” said AHA President Dick Davidson. “That’s
why they’re receiving the Circle of Life Award Citation of
Merit.”
Broadway House was chosen by a selection committee
made up of leaders from medicine, nursing, social work, and health
administration. The committee focused on innovative programs that
respect patient goals and preferences, provide comprehensive care,
acknowledge and address the family or caregivers’ concerns
and needs, and build systems and mechanisms of support to continue
the program for future patients and caregivers.
“It’s a privilege to be recognized for
the work and ideas we feel are so important to our community,"
said Nancy Urff, RNC, CDONA/LTC, Assistant Executive Director at
Broadway House. "This is an award for everyone involved with
Broadway House and we hope the success of our program helps inspire
others in this area."
