Broadway House is proud to announce that The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey has named Beverly Salley and Jernell Barbour as recipients of their 2008 Humanism in Healthcare Award. This award emphasizes the “human” aspect of resident care, and how it impacts the quality of life for all people. Effective medical care can only be accomplished in a compassionate healthcare environment. Beverly Salley, Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) and Jernell Barbour, Dietary Aide are staff members who exemplify the CARE in Broadway House for Continuing Care.
Ms. Salley was one of the first C.N.A.’s hired when the facility was preparing to open in 1994. For more than 14 years Beverly has provided routine daily hands-on nursing care for our residents. She is recognized by her supervisors and colleagues as a very compassionate caregiver. Beverly is a wonderful advocate for her residents. When a resident has a concern, she knows the individual well enough to identify that something needs to be talked about. Once a problem has been identified Beverly works to resolve the matter, referring the issue to her supervisors if necessary. Beverly then follows up to make sure the resident’s need is met. She epitomizes the patient-oriented care delivered at Broadway House.
Jernell Barbour has been “feeding” our residents literally and figuratively since 2006. Her caring ways have positively impacted our residents, as Jernell knows every resident by name, and understands that food is a great part of the healing process. Food provides comfort, recalls memories of good times and encourages resident decision-making. She staffs the special breakfast buffets and serves the residents compassion and kindness along with their coffee. Jernell works the weekly “Palliative Care Tea Cart”, bringing beverages and snacks to those residents who may be bedbound or relaxing in their room. Her gentle demeanor is a comfort to those who may be feeling ill or upset.
Our “house” is a better place because of Beverly and Jernell. They and all the other caring staff members provide a loving, nurturing environment for our residents. Compassionate healthcare starts and ends with the people who deliver the care. We are proud to have individuals like Beverly Salley and Jernell Barbour on our team! Congratulations on receiving this award.
