the organization's recognition as an Outstanding Employer at
the NJBIA Awards for Excellence Program on October 19, 2004. |
Broadway House
for Continuing Care, New Jersey's only specialized care facility
for people living with HIV/AIDS, recently earned the New Jersey
Business & Industry Association's (NJBIA) Award for Excellence
in the Outstanding Employer category. The Awards for Excellence
recognizes New Jersey organizations for creating jobs, protecting
the environment, outstanding human resources management and exceptional
public service.
"NJBIA's
Awards for Excellence are a celebration of all that is good about
New Jersey business," said NJBIA President Philip Kirschner.
"Winners create jobs and strengthen our economy. They provide
good salaries and benefits for their employees. They find innovative
solutions and improve the environment. And, like Broadway House
for Continuing Care, they devote their time and effort to make their
communities better."
The NJBIA award
follows Broadway House's national Circle of Life Award, which recognized
the facility for its outstanding programs that improve the care
of patients near the end of life or with life-threatening conditions.
The national Circle of Life award is supported by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation in Princeton, N.J and are sponsored by the American
Hospital Association, the American Association of Homes and Services
for the Aging, the American Medical Association and the National
Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.
"Broadway
House dedicates itself wholeheartedly to providing a caring environment
for all those who live and work here," said James Gonzalez,
MPH, CHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Broadway House.
"We are particularly proud to be honored with the NJBIA Award
for Excellence in the Outstanding Employer category."
Continued Gonzalez,
"A day in the life of a health care provider in a nursing home
is, at best, challenging. The work is physically and emotionally
demanding, the hours are long, and the wages are often low when
compared to the work performed.
In fact, employee
turnover rate for nursing homes is 93% compared to the average labor
turnover rate of 10%. For the last two years, the employee retention
rate at Broadway House has zoomed. Last quarter, the turnover rate
was only 4%. Compared to the national rate of 93%, this is remarkable."
Gonzalez credits
Broadway House's success as an "Outstanding Employer"
to program focused specifically on employee development and retention.
The multi-component initiative, put in place two years ago, seeks
to achieve multiple goals, including: prevention of employee burnout,
reduction in employee turnover, enhanced employee expertise, support
for employees' families that helps them live better lives, and improvements
to the work environment.
Broadway House
for Continuing Care serves 360 residents with HIV/AIDS annually.
Broadway House was opened in 1995 by a consortium of five hospitals
in the city of Newark, New Jersey. It is New Jersey's only specialized
nursing care facility for people living with HIV/AIDS. Broadway
House embraces the long-term care for people with HIV. More than
a house, it is "home" to residents with AIDS.
