May 5, 2006 - This May, the spring interns at Broadway House for Continuing Care will be leaving, and summer internships will begin. The departing interns attend a variety of New Jersey Colleges and Universities and helped in many different departments. During the academic year, Broadway House makes available a number of student internships. The qualified and committed students gain hands-on experience in their discipline of study, including the opportunity to participate as an active member in the Broadway House Network. Students can choose to apply for internships in Recreation, Public Relations, Community Health, Human Resources, or Substance Abuse.

Rhonda Wilson-Springer, a resident of Newark, interned in Recreation and will be graduating from New Jersey City University in May. Before coming to Broadway House she had been working with HIV/AIDS patients for many years, but feels she has never before “worked in a setting such as this. I enjoyed talking with residents on an individual basis, and seeing them become stronger, healthier, and leave Broadway House happier.” After graduation from NJCU, Wilson-Springer would like to go into HIV research, and will continue working with Broadway House as a volunteer.

This spring’s Public Relations intern, Teresa Afonso of Paterson will graduate from Felician College in January 2007. She is grateful for all of the experience she gained writing press releases for the local media and preparing articles for the facility’s quarterly newsletter. Afonso feels, “It was very simple to bond with everyone because all the people here have great hearts. I have learned things that I will carry with me forever.”

The staff at Broadway House would like to thank all of its spring interns for their hard work and commitment. An affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry, Broadway House for Continuing Care in Newark, is the state’s only specialized nursing care facility for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
